Myth Busting Solar Panels
You’ve probably heard a fair share of myths about solar power.
As solar energy grows more prevalent, so do the myths surrounding it. If you have talked to anyone who has solar panels you will likely hear a glowing tale of efficient energy, disappearing utility bills, zero maintenance, and futuristic choices.
You may be intrigued. But if you talk to a neighborhood stick-in-the-mud who is against the adoption of solar panels, you may hear a different story that makes you rethink solar panels altogether.
As with any choice, there are certainly pros and cons. Just be sure you’re getting your information from an actual knowledgeable source on solar energy, because those myths you’re hearing? They’re just myths!
Six Common Solar Power Myths
Myth #1: Solar Panels Are Too Expensive
While this myth used to be true, it is no longer. Did you know the cost of solar panels have dropped by over 80% in the last decade? You may see them on the mansion homes in your city, but if you start looking closely you’ll see them on houses of all shapes and sizes, in all types of neighborhoods. Solar panels are more affordable than every, and they feature tax incentive AND financing! Don’t assume they’re outside your price range.
Myth #2: Solar Panels Are An Eyesore
You were probably taken aback the first time you saw solar panels on someone’s house, since they were new and unfamiliar. But the current design of solar panels is thin and roof-hugging, making them as sleek and unnoticeable as possible. The important thing to remember is that one day everyone will have them, and one you have yours you won’t even notice them anymore!
Myth #3: Solar Panels Don’t Work In Utah
Totally false! Even cloudy and rainy states like Utah can be have solar panels that compete with those in Florida or Arizona in solar power production. In fact, the Greatest Snow On Earth that makes Utah famous means there is a lot of reflected light that can then be captured by your solar panels year round!
Myth #4: Wait Until The Cost Of Solar Panels Drops
It’s true that solar panel science has advanced rapidly and that the cost might come down further. But the giant advancements have been made – the cost isn’t going to cut in half again. In the meantime you’re paying a utility bill that could be nonexistent and missing out on tax incentives that could disappear in the future.
Myth #5: Solar Panels Dangerous & Time Consuming
Despite what your uncle Ben might have told you, this one is just plain silly. Solar panels are safe and sustainable. And they require basically no maintenance at all! You can install and forget them!
Myth #6: Solar Panels Only Work On Certain Homes
Often we hear that potential customers are worried that they will not be able to use solar panels due to the size, layout, or orientation of their house. It is true that most solar panels need to be installed on south-facing eaves of a house. The roof does need to have a substantial area uninterrupted by angles, chimneys, etc. But most homes will have a place for solar panels. Not to mention there is always the option of yard-mounted solar panels if you need them.
